Tiger Woods Apology Tour – Press Release

-Just finished an interview with AP Television and have ABC coming to my office during the actual press conference.

I’m still available for TIGER WOODS interviews or quotes:

Can talk about what Tiger Woods NEEDS to say, what he PROBABLY will say, and the impact on THE BUSINESS OF TIGER WOODS

==============================
Jess Todtfeld can say:
-Tiger Woods must apologize to his wife and his fans
-Woods must acknowledge that he has hurt and tarnished the game of golf
-Woods must show emotion for fans to reconnect
-The bigger issue here is the financial impact related to Woods’ endorsement deals as well as the entire game of golf. Viewership and attendance for golf goes down dramatically when Woods has been out due to injury. This has already cost him and the industry many millions
-The GOOD NEWS for Tiger. America forgives and to some degree forgets
-He CAN get past this point in his career
(Todtfeld can also compare this situation to what we’ve seen with Kobe Bryant, recent politicians, Martha Stewart.)
“So far Tiger Woods has screwed up every chance to fix his situation. We need to see a real and apologetic Tiger Woods for the world to forgive him.”

Giving a Perfect Cooking Demo TV Interview Segment

Below is an article that I submitted to PR and Marketing expert Scott Lorenz. (http://www.westwindcos.com/biography.htm)
If you’re looking for PR or Marketing expertise, you owe it to yourself to reach out to him.

Jess Todtfeld, former Fox producer, current media trainer and President of “Success In Media,” (www.SuccessInMedia.com) offers these 9 tips and advice:

There are three groups that have needs that need to be met:
1) The producer is looking for interesting / compelling content. (You need to make them look great.)
2) The Audience needs to learn something. What is their takeaway? Have you made their lives better?
3) YOU! You ultimately want something to happen as a result of this interview. Are you including something that points people in the direction you want? Plugging a free item can get people to your web site. It’s also a much easier plug for everyone. Once they sign up for the free item, you need to be able to retain their email address and market to them in the future.

-Don’t expect the media outlet to have a stylist. You must make your demo look great from beginning to end
-Bring all the ingredients, tools for preparing, and a finished version of your dish. Don’t expect to really cook it during the segment.
-Bring extra finished food for the crew. The quickest place to their hearts is through their stomachs. It’ll be worth every penny in materials when they decide to book you again.
-Think about your segment from A to Z. Your other job is to make the producer’s life easy. That it turn will make them love you and book you again.
-Be fun. Have a personality. It’s not just about the food.
-Interact with the host or anchor
-Give them a copy of the recipe and let them know they can put it on their web site. On the resume include your contact web site so people can click through and find you.
- Days before the interview, ask politely on the phone if they could put a “For More Information:” lower third graphic on the screen with your web address. It’s pretty standard, but if you don’t mention it, they might easily forget it.
-Have something free on your web site to plug. It could be 5 of your most requested, low-cal recipes. It could be a chapter of your book. Either way, you must give great value. You also must be able to monetize this new relationship. That is something I impress on my clients every day.

The Top 25 Book Fairs and Book Festivals Authors Should Attend

Many of you know that I put on a special Author Media Training workshop the day before Book Expo.  One common question from authors is “what are the best events authors can attend?”  Scott Lorenz, one of the sharpest publicists around, recently wrote an article on this topic.  He also gave me the ok to post it below.  If you are looking for a publicist who is especially strong in this area, you owe it to yourself to at least reach out to Scott.

The Top 25 Book Fairs and Book Festivals Authors Should Attend

Overview: Book fairs are wonderful places to interact with fellow authors, publishers, network with book industry leaders, locate the help you need such as a publicist or book editor, and learn what’s new in the marketplace. Here is a list of 25 book fairs and events that are worthy of your attendance.

by Scott Lorenz

Are book fairs an effective way to promote books? As a book publicist and book marketing specialist, I am the first to impress on authors the new and powerful marketing avenues open to all authors on the Internet – from book websites to book trailers to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. While these are fantastic tools when used properly, authors should never overlook opportunities to meet the reading public face-to-face where they can easily be found – at book fairs, book festivals, trade shows, book conferences and conventions.

Any book event, regardless of size and name recognition, is worth attending by an author who is serious about promoting their book. This requires personal effort and time by the author in person. People don’t want to meet the author’s assistant or friend; no they want to talk to the author.

Book fairs provide an excellent chance to learn more about the publishing industry, about booksellers, publishers, distributors and marketers. The attending author will also learn a great deal about what readers want and how to reach readers. And while acquiring a vast amount of knowledge about the book industry, the author can also take advantage of the chance to expose their book and name to a new audience – leaders in the book industry who are interested in meeting new authors. While you may not walk away with a book deal you’ll make yourself known to the movers and shakers and that has long-lasting benefits. Remember, word of mouth is one of the strongest promotional tools available and authors need to be where the mouths are – the mouths of book publishers, distributors, promoters, agents and readers – at book fairs, conventions and conferences.

Book fairs provide an excellent opportunity to encounter media reps in search of a story. Producers of TV and radio programs, editors of newspapers, magazines, book reviewers and online media outlets attend these events in search of stories that otherwise would be under their radar. Never, never pass up on the opportunity to meet the media. Keep an eye out for small I-phone sized video cameras too as they shoot broadcast quality footage in natural light. If you see somebody using one, invite them over and give them a pitch. They could be shooting for C-SPAN, CNN, a book review blog or the local cable show; you won’t know unless you ask.

The major book conferences and conventions involve travel expenses such as airlines and hotel lodging, and a week’s investment of your time. But book fairs can be found close to home, easily accessed by car and often are only one or two days. A typical regional book fair will have 1,000 or more attendees and 100 or more exhibitors, providing a realistic exposure of 300 visitors a day. Why would an author not want to spend a Saturday and a Sunday within 100 miles of home to meet 600 readers or a reporter, editor or book reviewer?

At a book fair, just as at a book signing event, the author will want to bring promotional literature to pass out. Passing out promotional bookmarks or book covers is a great way to generate future sales for months and months after the book fair ends. The give-away should contain the author’s contact information, the book’s name, the front cover artwork, author’s website address, and where the book can be purchased online.

I also remind my author clients that book fairs often need speakers. By volunteering to speak, the author not only gains great exposure but can also add that appearance to their resume and press releases. But plan ahead; dates for panel participants, speakers and autograph sessions are arranged months in advance.

Book fairs are often attended by best-selling authors who will be willing to spend time with you sharing tips on writing, on how to be successful, and advice on where to find the help you need.

In summary, book fairs are wonderful places to interact with fellow authors, publishers, network with book industry leaders, locate the help you need such as a publicist or book editor, and learn what’s new in the marketplace. -Jess Todtfeld

A letter from Jen Groover

creator of the Butler Bag & Launchers Cafe
Hi Jess,

When I created the Butler Bag & Launchers Cafe I began taking

notes on the world of business and innovation.  As I started

appearing on different news channels I realized there was a real

desire among many to start their own companies or launch their

ideas.  That’s when I decided to compile all of my notes and put

my energies into creating a book for the aspiring entrepreneur

in everyone.  And guess what?

I’m excited to announce the release of my new book:

What If? & Why Not?

How to Transform Your Fears Into Action and Start the

Business of Your Dreams.

This book was written for the everyday person who has thought

about starting their own business but didn’t think it was

possible.  It’s for the everyday person that should be an

everyday entrepreneur!

Starting a business isn’t easy, but it’s easier than you think. You

have plenty to worry about–logistics, money & time. But your

biggest obstacle isn’t WHAT you think—it’s HOW you’re

thinking. In my book, I tell you how to turn those negative

“What If” thoughts into positive “Why Nots?” Full of personal

stories from entrepreneurs, What If? & Why Not? gives

practical advice and calls-to-action simply not found in

other books.

Businessmen and women and journalists I’ve worked with have

told me how What If? & Why Not? is a much-needed

resource for budding entrepreneurs. Here is what Donny

Deutsch had to say: “Jen’s book is the perfect extension to teach

others how to create their own success.”

What If? & Why Not? won’t be available to the general public

until March but I’m offering loyal customers like you the book

now at a 20% DISCOUNT.

To get this special offer, order at www.JenGroover.com. When

you add the book to your cart, it will prompt you for a coupon

code. Simply enter FEARLESS into the coupon code box to

receive $5 off.
I hope you enjoy the book and you find much value and

inspiration in it.  Start fulfilling your dreams today!

Sincerely,

Jen Groover

Late-Night Shift – Someone Might be Out of a Job

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/08/business/media/08leno.html?hp

COULD JIMMY KIMMEL BECOME THE NEW KING OF LATE NIGHT & COULD CARSON DALY BE OUT OF A JOB?

Here’s my take as a communication consultant:

-NBC has been in a predicament for a while to keep both Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien with the network
-Any wrong move could upset that situation.
-Jay Leno even threatened during his monologue on Thursday night that he might take a vacation. “I hear FOX is nice this time of year.”
-If Jay Leno did a half hour show at 11:35, NBC essentially would have too many hosts/shows in Late Night.

-This would mean that Jimmy Fallon or Carson Daly would have to go.  It would save the network a lot of money, plus, they don’t need to pay for shows going that late into the evening.
-My prediction is if NBC makes a schedule shift, they would at some point, be forced to remove Carson Daly from the roster.  Carson has been more visable with the network’s New Year’s alternative to Dick Clark’s show, But Jimmy Fallon could take that job and be much much better at it.

Who are the winners and losers if there’s a shift?

Winners:
-7 year veteran Jimmy Kimmel has been a dark horse.  This gives his “in between” time slot more legitimacy.
-Leno -NBC believes in him so much, they are willing to upset all the other late-night hosts and shows to please him.
-Affiliates only if NBC can put some rating winning shows in that slot… a tall order.

Losers:
-Conan -This is somewhat emasculating for the new host of the Tonight Show so early on.  Publicly he’ll say he’s a team player, but privately he can’t be loving what must feel like a demotion.  NBC had better by him a villa to ease his unhappiness.
-NBC affiliates – The disruption probably won’t help long term.  Viewers are already taking to cable, the internet, video game systems, DVDs, Ipods, Iphones, and whatever new gadget/technology comes out tomorrow to compete for our eyeballs.
-Carson Daly if he get’s phased out.

Just interviewed on my 2009 Media Winners & Losers List

Listen to my interview with KIFG radio in Iowa falls.

What do you think?  Do you agree with the list?  Did we miss anyone?
